Week 6 Day 2 (Thursday, Sept 29) -Homework

Being creating your Layout Comp for Project 2. Based on advice and critique of concept ideas and thumbnail sketches, begin composing photographs (as tracing references) and building illustrations that construct the steps involved in your instructional diagram.

Imagery for all steps of your task should be sized and positioned in Illustrator by the start of next class, Tuesday, Oct 4, 4:30pm. **Midpoint group crit will take place Monday, Oct 11.

Week 6 Day 1 (Tuesday, Sept 27) -Homework

1. Choose 3 out of your 5 topics proposed for project 2, and create 9 different and distinct thumbnail sketches (for each topic) that will explore possible layout choices (number of steps, proposed imagery, etc). Sketches must be scanned and emailed by Thursday, Sept 28, 5:00pm.

2. Complete Drawing Exercise 2 (create illustration based off a photograph of a person). Save photograph and line art drawing separately as PDFs (8.5x11 sized document) and emailed by Thursday, Sept 28, 5:00pm.

Next class, Thursday, Sept 29 will be a work from home studio day. I will be available for in person feedback/work reviews from 4-5pm in Rm 111. Work submitted via email will receive feedback on Friday, with the expectation that you continue to work on the development of project 2 during the weekend.

Week 5 Day 2 (Thursday, Sept 22) -Homework

1. Brainstorm at least 5 possible topics for project 2 in your sketchbook. List out steps for each possible task, who the intended audience/demographic will be. Does the task require any prior knowledge or experience? Sketches and ideas will be reviewed at beginning of next class.

2. Complete Drawing Exercise 1. Print out photograph and line art drawing separately onto 8.5x11 paper for review during next class.

Project 2: Instructional Diagram

Description:
Create an instructional diagram that teaches an audience or demographic how to complete a specific task. The goal of the project is to communicate a concise and clear set of instructions, in the format of a poster, that explains the essential parts and operations of a chosen task.

Objectives:
+ To gain experience with vector based drawing tools and techniques.
+ To reinforce design principles that support visual choices in creative problem solving solutions.

Specifications:
Size: Tabloid sized (11" x 17") white paper.
Media: Photographs, photomontage used as drawing references. The assembly of your final comp must be done using Adobe Illustrator.
Text: Title must be set in Helvetica Bold 36pt or larger; all other text, if used, should be kept to a minimum (phrases + labels)and must be set in Helvetica 12pt.

Timeline + Deadlines:
Conceptual Brainstorming : Brainstorm 5 possible topics in sketchbook due Tuesday, Sept 27, 4:30pm.
Thumbnail Sketches : Create 9 different + distinct sketches (each) for 3 possible topics due Thursday, Sept 29, 4:30pm.
Initial Layout Comps: Choose best topic and generate components in full sized layout (midpoint group crit Oct 11).
Project 2 Final Critique: Printed comp and all process work due Tuesday, October 18, 4:30pm.

Week 4 Day 2 (Thursday-Sept 15): Homework

Final Critique for Project 1 will take place next class, Tuesday, Sept 20 at 4:30pm.

What to submit:
1. Black and white printout of project on 11x17 (tabloid) plain white paper. **Write your full name on the back, in pencil. Pin to wall by Tuesday at 4:30pm.

2. Final PDF(X-1a format) export from Illustrator file. **Load PDF onto desktop of instructor's station by Tuesday at 4:30pm.

3. CD with project 1 files (organized as followed below:)

Main Project folder with naming structure: FullName_Project1_ART2643

>>"Process Docs" folder (with PDF scan of initial sketches + text content brainstorming)
>>"Design Files" folder (with Illustrator file)
>>"Final Output" folder (with midpoint crit pdf, final PDF/X-1a)












CD must be submitted by end of class session (Tuesday at 7:20pm). Late work will be subjected to penalties.

Continue working on typographic layout comp for Project 1 in Illustrator. Final printed layout due next Tuesday, Sept 20.

Be sure to focus on the overall project objectives:

+ To create an awareness of the image of typography.
+ To explore positive and negative space relationships in a design composition.
+ To experiment with the design element value in a black-and-white composition.

Week 3 Day 2 (Thursday, Sept 8): Homework

Continue working on typographic layout comp for Project 1 in Illustrator.

Review the principles of design presentation slides and reflect on how the use of type and basic letterform are effectively telling your personal and unique story. Don't be afraid to think metaphorically and conceptually.

Mini group critiques will be conducted during next class. Export what you have completed in Illustrator as a PDF for presentation in pre-selected groups by start of next class (4:30pm).

Week 3 Day 1 (Thursday, Sept 6) - Homework

Continue working on typographic layout comp for Project 1 in Illustrator. Keep in mind the overall focus of the project is to examine typographic letterforms that will illustrate multi-facets of yourself.

How do the lines, shapes, style of your letterforms, placement of letterforms, composition, black-white contrast tell the story about your personality? Don't be afraid to think metaphorically and conceptually. Also focus on the following overall project objectives:

+ To create an awareness of the image of typography.
+ To explore positive and negative space relationships in a design composition.
+ To experiment with the design element value in a black-and-white composition.

Being creating initial Layout Comps for Project 1. Based on advice and critique of concept ideas and portrait sketches, determine which sketch best captures your personality and the overall tone you wish to strengthen in defining yourself in a typographic self portrait. Generate basic typographic elements in a tabloid paper sized layout in Illustrator.
